CSI REPORT SHOWS GULF COAST, NATION STILL VULNERABLE 5 YEARS AFTER KATRINA

Today CSI released a new report Recovery, Interrupted: Gulf Coast Communities of Color Five Years After Hurricane Katrina. The report highlights the alarming lack of improvement in the condition of Gulf Coast communities of color since Hurricane Katrina. The report finds that Gulf Coast communities of color continue to struggle with high levels of poverty, low incomes and poor educational outcomes five years after the storm.  As a result, these communities remain highly vulnerable as the region confronts yet another catastrophe—the British Petroleum oil disaster.

Though the challenges are many, opportunities abound to link racial equity, environmental sustainability and resilience to natural and man-made hazards through bold, new policy approaches. Recovery, Interrupted lays out recommendations for how we can seize such opportunities and build a brighter future for the Gulf Coast and our nation as a whole.
