CSI CONDEMNS RACIAL UNDERTONES OF MCCAIN'S "THAT ONE" REFERENCE TO OBAMA

Center for Social Inclusion Calls Reference Latest in a Racially Charged Election Season

October 8, 2008 -- During the presidential debate on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, candidate John McCain dismissively referred to his opponent, Barack Obama, as "That One," drawing criticism from racial justice advocates as well as the campaign and its surrogates.

"The racial undertones were subtle but unmistakable," says CSI Director Maya Wiley. "By making a dismissive, condescending remark like this, McCain was tapping into a current of superiority among white voters. It was an attempt to 'otherize' Obama and tap into the implicit bias that so many of us hold."

"It reminds me of the ad "The One" and what David Gergen said," says StopDogWhistleRacism.com Project Director Ludovic Blain. "McCain is saying, in typical under the radar fashion, that Obama is 'uppity.'"
