Center for Social Inclusion (CSI) Appoints Glenn Harris as New President
New York, NY — Today, the Center for Social Inclusion’s (CSI) Board of Directors announced the appointment of Glenn Harris as the new CSI President. Mr. Harris brings to CSI over twenty years of experience working with grassroots community groups, foundations, and government agencies to build a more just, democratic and racially equitable society.
For the last six years, Mr. Harris has served as Manager of Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI), a citywide effort designed to make racial equity a reality in the city of Seattle. Through Mr. Harris’s leadership, RSJI dramatically increased the civic participation of Seattle residents to advance racial equity, tripled non-construction city contracts for women and people of color-owned businesses, increased access to government services for non-English speakers, and trained over 10,000 city government employees on institutionalizing racial equity. Building on RSJI’s achievements, Mr. Harris has supported the start of similar initiatives in jurisdictions across the country, and helped to found the regional Governing for Racial Equity Network. Glenn’s work in the City of Seattle also included the establishment of the Seattle Office of the Community Police Commission and four years as the Southeast District Coordinator for the Department of Neighborhoods.
Prior to his work at RSJI, Mr. Harris worked with the Western States Center, a non-profit intermediary that provides technical assistance and training to organizations working to achieve social change in an eight-state region. Mr. Harris was also the Interim-Director of the McKenzie River Gathering (MRG) Foundation in Portland, Oregon. Mr. Harris currently serves as a Board Member of the Seattle Foundation’s Neighbor-to-Neighbor Fund and the Willamette Valley Law Project, an Oregon-based non-profit supporting farmworker rights.
“For over a decade, CSI has been at the forefront of addressing structural barriers to opportunity, particularly in communities of color,” said Mr. Harris. “My life’s work has been about ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to benefit from public policies and that communities most excluded from opportunity have a leading role in crafting those policies. I am truly honored and excited to lead CSI’s talented team and build on the organization’s groundbreaking work in advancing racial equity.”
The Chair of CSI’s Board of Directors Paul Hudson said: “CSI’s strength is its multi-pronged approach to advancing racial equity and building policy solutions that work for everyone.” Mr. Hudson added, “Mr. Harris possesses the unique combination of experience, skills, and commitment to take CSI’s work to the next level and build on the work that Founder and former President Maya Wiley started.”
