RACE REACTION: VOTER RESPONSES TO TEA PARTY MESSAGES IN ECONOMICALLY STRESSED COMMUNITIES
A new CSI report, Race Reaction: Voter Responses to Tea Party Messages in Economically-Stressed Communities, highlights CSI's analysis of election results, foreclosure data, and campaign messages from 60 congressional districts. CSI finds that the Tea Party capitalized on economic insecurity and used race as a wedge to win in economically-stressed, majority-White districts. In notable contrast, the Party failed to win in majority-White Congressional districts not in economic distress, or in economically-distressed congressional districts where the population of people of color was above 40%. These findings suggest that race, coupled with economic pain, may have played a significant role in the Tea Party's success. Race Reaction provides community organizers, advocates, and policymakers with suggestions on how to craft effective messages to combat the race wedge and identifies opportunities for greater coalition-building in diverse communities.
