What Obama could learn from Clinton and Johnson on racial inequities

I remember when Sen. Barack Obama confronted race in America in an eloquent and powerful 2008 speech, promising to work for a “more equal, more free, more caring and more prosperous America.” He pledged to take on “the complexities of race in this country that we’ve never really worked through.” Sadly, Obama is falling short of the president who accomplished the most for communities of color since Lincoln: white Southerner Lyndon Johnson. He is also falling short of another white, Southern president who pursued a national dialogue on race: Bill Clinton.

History shows that when presidents confront racial inequity, America sees vast improvements. President Johnson pushed for passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965. Black voter registration rates in …

Today, Brave New Foundation has released its newest film, Koch Brothers Exposed, and we at CSI have partnered with them to expose the Koch Brothers’ influence in exacerbating racial inequity in Wake County, North Carolina. Check out the film:

The Facts: After the November 2009 elections, the Wake County school board dismantled socio-economic diverse schools and began to implement a neighborhood schools plan that would resegregate schools. Resegregation in schools would be a disaster. It would turn back the clock fifty years with the creation of high poverty, racially isolated schools. The integration plan destroyed by Koch-supported board of education members was used as a model for high achieving, diverse schools throughout the country. This October 2011, Wake Country elections will decide if schools become resegregated. Koch-supported candidates are still pushing for neighborhood schools and to end diversity.
