NEW CSI REPORT HIGHLIGHTS THE DISPROPORTIONAL BURDEN BUDGET CUTS PLACE ON NEW YORK CITY’S RESIDENTS OF COLOR
Monday, May 16th, 2011The 2011 Federal Budget cuts come in the midst of an ongoing Recession that has burdened states with high populations of color, most of all. Yet, when we cut health and job training services to those who need it most, we lose our opportunity to build a healthy and strong country. And New York is no exception. New York, ranks 24th in CSI’s 2011 Impact Index and faces increased rates of uninsurance, unemployment, and poverty. New York City is set to grapple with tough decisions on the budget, while Congress is set to tackle both the debt ceiling and the 2012 budget.
Our finding show that the 2011 Congressional Cuts in WIC funding, energy assistance, health access, and job training are likely to have negative consequences for all New York City’s vulnerable residents, especially residents of color. For example, Congress gutted over $600 million in assistance to Community Health Clinics. …

Thursday, April 14th, 2011“The recession is over!” Or so economists and politicians like to claim. That statement is true if we define the term “recession” by the growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). But when we define recession by its impact on the economic and social wellbeing of states, a very different story emerges. And while families across the nation continue to take a recessionary pounding, families of color are feeling even greater pain. The recession is not over – it is just hitting its stride.
The so-called “end of the recession” has dominated the conversation, providing the impetus and justifications for the latest round of cuts in the 2011 federal budget and proposed cuts in state budgets across the country even as people continue to suffer. Many of these proposed cuts are to the very programs that have helped people weather the storm: education, healthcare, food programs, and unemployment benefits.
How we …

Friday, April 1st, 2011Yesterday, while speaking at Georgetown University, President Obama made a bold claim that the United States will cut oil imports in ten years by one-third. In his speech, he offered solutions by calling for increased vehicle efficiency requirements and investing in biofuels as an alternative energy source. It is an admirable and welcomed goal, but President Obama’s plan still defines energy security in the narrow scope of being “independent from foreign oil.”
Unfortunately, this has the unintended consequence of focusing the nation’s energy policy debate down the path of finding an “all of the above” energy solution, which heavily depends on domestic oil, natural gas, and increased coal production. Substantial reliance on fossil fuels only benefits the scarcity model where a small fraction of American society profits, rather than celebrating the abundance model of renewable energy where we can all participate. The current policy frame just delays the inevitability of …

Thursday, March 17th, 2011The Center for Social Inclusion is proud to share an exciting new report, The Promise and Challenge of Community Broadband Models: Lessons from the National Symposium on Community-Scale Broadband. The question of how best to shape the future of the Internet has never been more important. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) continues to explore strategies to get Americans access to broadband services and debate what corporations can charge us to access information on the Internet. This report shines a light on the communities that are being left behind in the Digital Age and lifts up local innovations that are connecting people to the Internet in ways that build opportunities, both economic and social. This work goes beyond the question of expanding high-speed Internet services – it builds a vision of a broadband future where all communities have high-speed Internet and are able to access new jobs and businesses, better health …
