Dismantling Structural Racism: Strategies and
Actions to Make Another World Possible
(June 28, 2007 at the Atlanta Civic Center)
Providing comparative data on global and U.S.
poverty by race in the context of ongoing paradigm shifts in
technology and infrastructure and the politics of global warming, this
workshop was a lively and participatory discussion on the promises and
perils of these emerging trends and its implications for building
support for race-conscious public policies and multi-racial
alliances. The workshop highlighted fundamental economic assumptions
and assertions and discussed their contradictions in terms of
immigration, trade, food security and other relevant issues.

Local Leadership for Strong Communities: Lessons
after the Storm
(June 29th, 2007 at St. Luke’s Episcopal
Church)
Lifting up both the opportunities and challenges of
Gulf Coast rebuilding, this workshop shared the findings of CSI’s
2006-2007 Southern Local Leadership Capacity Scan. In a rich
conversation with two emerging Gulf Coast leaders, Colette Pichon
Battle (Slidell, LA) and Cassandra Welchlin (Jackson, MS), the group
discussed the triumphs and trials of rebuilding communities and lives
in the Gulf Coast. From support for long-term community visioning and
planning to building stronger advocacy connections across critical
issues to supporting emergent and often young women of color
leadership, the workshop highlighted capacity needs facing communities
across the South. Sharing their experiences, Colette and Cassandra
also pointed to the promise of new leadership with a vision and skill
for building new alliances that will help bring about a strong,
healthy and racially equitable Gulf Coast and South.
