CSI Launches Map Showcasing Local Innovation in Renewable Energy Across the U.S.
New York, NY — Today, the Center for Social Inclusion (CSI) launched Energy Democracy for All, an interactive map that pinpoints the communities across America that are building their local economies while fighting against climate change by developing community-scale renewable energy projects. The map highlights over 100 of these projects, with a particular lens toward projects helmed by communities of color, who by 2042, will become the majority in our nation.
Projects include: Co-op Power in Vermont, Lakota Solar Enterprise in South Dakota, MPower in Oregon, Renew East Kentucky in Kentucky, the Union County Renewable Energy Initiative in New Jersey and the Georgetown Landfill Solar Project in Texas.
With Congress failing to act amidst a growing body of research that warns of the disastrous consequences of climate change, communities are coming together now to be participants, decision-makers and owners in a new energy economy. Energy Democracy for All elevates this innovation to inspire other communities to participate in Energy Democracy.
“This map is about hope, possibility and opportunity. Energy Democracy means transforming our communities so that they are healthier and more resilient,” says Anthony Giancatarino, who leads CSI’s Energy Democracy program. He adds, “But to achieve a true Energy Democracy, we must support the participation of all communities, particularly communities of color, who, due to a legacy of inequity, are often the first hit and the most vulnerable to climate change.”
